Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone
Certificate: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane
Length: 152 minutes Director: Chris Columbus
Rating: On learning that he is a wizard, Harry Potter enrols in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There he learns the art of magic, gets involved in the popular wizard sport of Quidditch, and also learns the truth about how his parents died. He also encounters adventure when he discovers that someone is trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone from its well guarded hiding place.

This is a faithful conversion from the novel to the big screen, and even the author, JK Rowling, is impressed with the end result. All the scenes in the book are impressively brought to life, and the film captures the atmosphere of its settings and characters perfectly. The young actors are all impressive in their debut roles, and are ably supported by a well known cast.

The only slight niggle is that the film is a little long, and very young audiences may find this difficult to cope with. However, most will be delighted with the end result. The children's novels are hugely popular among both children and adults, and the movie is likely to be just as popular. The film should also be entertaining to both Harry Potter novices, who've never picked up any of the books, and established fans.

With the second film already in production, this is likely to be a franchise that will continue for some time to come.
